Tankless Water Heaters
Hot water when you turn the tap, without a tank to keep hot
A tankless water heater, also called an on-demand heater, heats water only when you turn on a hot tap. Cold water runs through the unit and a gas burner or an electric element heats it on the way through. There is no storage tank to keep hot around the clock.
Tankless Water Heaters
Helps with
What it fixes
- An old tank water heater near the end of its life
- Wanting to stop paying to keep a full tank hot all day
- Freeing up the space a tank takes in the garage, closet or attic
- Steady hot water that does not run out after one long shower
How it works
- You turn on a hot tap and cold water starts to flow into the unit.
- A gas burner or electric element heats the water as it passes through.
- When you shut the tap off, the heater shuts off too. Nothing is kept hot while you sleep.
A good fit for many homes, but it has to be sized for how much hot water your house uses at the same time. With hard water, a softener ahead of it helps protect it from scale.
Questions
About tankless water heaters
Will a tankless heater keep up with my family?
It depends on sizing. The U.S. Department of Energy says most tankless units deliver about 2 to 5 gallons of hot water a minute, and that running a shower and the dishwasher at once can stretch one to its limit. That is why the unit gets sized to your house, and some homes use two.
Does hard water matter for a tankless heater?
It matters for any water heater. The U.S. Geological Survey says that when hard water is heated, scale can form that shortens the life of equipment and raises the cost of heating water. If your water is hard, ask about pairing the heater with a softener.
